Summer is usually the season of music festivals here in the UK; not that you would know it was summer as you sit shivering in your tent and develop trench foot from living in damp wellies for a whole long weekend! It is much more civilised to attend a winter festival. After all, the venues have to be indoors to stop both performers and audiences from freezing to death, you can buy a decent range of drinks, get in touch with Apple Mac support if your laptop breaks down and – and this is how you know you’re getting really old – you can sit down during the show without getting mud all over your bum!

One of the best winter music festivals is Airwaves, which is held every October in Reykjavik and features the best in Icelandic and Scandinavian artistes, as well as a few token Brits and Americans. Not everyone can afford to jet off to Iceland to see a few gigs, however, so instead I’m going to do you a wee preview of a fabulous event a lot closer to home.

Celtic Connections, which is held in venues of various sizes throughout Glasgow during January and February, might sound like it’s all bagpipes and Gaelic folk music, but there is a lot more to it than the name implies. Sure, there are a fair few chunky knit sweaters on show but the idea is that any band or singer whose style of music was even vaguely inspired by Celtic culture can appear. Which is how you end up with a Scottish salsa band playing alongside a good old-fashioned rock guitar group while next door there’s someone playing a harp; it really is the most eclectic festival out there and if you don’t find something you like then I suspect you’re not a real music fan after all!

The 1980’s popular band R.E.M. recently made an announcement that after 30 years of staying on the wave, they are parting ways. The band was formed in 1980 when lead singer Michael Stipe, Bill Berry a drummer, guitarist Peter Buck, and bass player Mike Mills, had a meeting of the minds. They had been very popular with underground and campus audiences. But it wasn’t until 1987 when they were able to capture the attention of the mainstream popular music audience as they hit the air with their song “The One I Love.” Their popularity surged and they were able to ink a deal with record label Warner Bros..

They were now playing for sold out stadium audiences instead of bars and college campuses. The band was enjoying success being a pioneer of alternative music and reached the peak as they released “Out of Time,” their 7th album in 1991. Even critics and tough-minded audiences were impressed with the album. That year was also the flying moments of the band as they released their signature single “Losing My Religion.”

I remember my friends and I getting some custom REM stickers made cause we were so crazy about this band back then. I would love to be able to say to you here is the page where I bought my custom stickers, but sadly they aren’t in business anymore.

R.E.M. released “Monster” in 1994 showcasing the hit “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?” from the album Monster. This turned out to be the bands last true commercial hit. The next decade was not as productive and joyful for the band because of the changes in music sound and style that was being put out by other acts.

It was even a shocking announcement they made in their website that they are finally breaking up. In their official statement, they said that they call it a day for the band and they leave with the sense of finality, astonishment and gratitude at all that they have achieved.

Not many of us can boldly say that all songs on our desktop, laptop, and all forms of music player are 100 percent legally purchased. In fact, music fans hardly have a clean bill on the legality of their songs. Nobody is completely innocent. While checking information online about apple mac repair London, I came across research that shows the music industry is losing millions of pounds to illegal music downloads. The act of illegal music downloads has become easier due to fast internet connections and the ease in sourcing for songs. You don’t really need a computer to download songs this days as everything can now be done on phones. Statistics show that the rate of illegal music download continues to affect the growth of the music industry around the world.

The figures notwithstanding, music fans have a different opinion. The result of a recent poll on a music site believes that illegal download is unstoppable. It was concluded that nothing good comes without a disadvantage. Illegal downloads was described as the dark side of technological innovations in music delivery platforms. A friend of mine also raised another point. She said that artists don’t look like they are losing anything and that many of them remain rich. She is of the opinion that not all music lovers can afford to buy all the songs they’d love to have. She believes illegal downloads are overrated and things are okay as long as artists are still making enough money to live their expensive lifestyles. It i s hard to draw a conclusion but it doesn’t seem illegal music downloads is stopping soon.

A growing wave of music has been slowly bubbling up across the globe that is rarely talked about. Whilst many mainstream radio stations generally ignore it, this music has millions of fans and consumers all eager to purchase or download it. It’s becoming a substantial part of the music industry and some execs have finally begun to take a bit of notice. I’m talking of course about computer game soundtracks.

Say these words to a radio DJ and you’ll probably be laughed out of the studio, but the simple fact is computer games are big business. The industry generates billions of pounds a year – far more then Hollywood and the wider music industry can generate at the moment. Game music has become an integral part of this and many soundtracks and arrangements are available for purchase and download across the internet and on the move. The best roaming prices have enabled people to purchase and download music wherever they are, and computer game music is no exception.

Good examples of best selling soundtracks include Okami, The Legend of Zelda and Halo 3. The scores are no longer electronic tics and beats; they have evolved into rock music, pop and sweeping orchestral pieces composed and performed by professional musicians and artists. Back in 2005 the BBC posted an article detailing just how much has changed in the computer game music scene since the early hey days of 8 bit machines.

Artists and executives across the industry have begun to take note and recognise a form of music that is breaking the boundaries between the traditional genres of rock, classical, pop, hip hop and many more.

The trance band that recently shook the world with its performances is on the best of its professional development. The trio from the UK is progressing towards the best band of 2011 and its performances around the world have been seen by total of more than 1 000 000 people, some of which traveled distances between continents to see their favorite trance icons. They definitely need no vinyl stickers to advertise their activity – more of the trance and house lovers are now in love in another dimension of music – the one created by Above and Beyond.

The latest from the trio is coming on the 6th of June – the date when their latest album would be released – Group Therapy. The tracks for this extensive project are supported by some of the best jazz, pop and dance singers. Their biggest hit already is the ’Thing Called Love'that has been played on their various tours. The track has already been chosen for the record of the week twice in the A&B’s official podcast – Trance Around the World. The album would also contain the super hit “Sun and Moon'that became one of UK’s favorites in the charts by MTV.

Trance Around the World is also progressing in the charts, being selected as the second best trance podcast after Armin’s A State of Trance. The good thing about TATW is that it is presenting the trance music from a new angle using the music of the newly established trance players and DJs.

With the upcoming release of the album and with more than 370 episodes of TATW, Above and Beyond remains one of the trance icons in the modern electronic music industry.

I am sure many people at one time or the other have fallen in love with a particular song and you don’t understand the language in which it was sung. Well, if you have not then you are probably alone or you are simply not a fan of music. Personally, I have a number of songs, artistes and bands that I really like but do not understand a word of their language. I sometimes ask people meanings and memorize some part of the lyrics just from continuous singing and listening alone. While searching for worldwide roaming information, I stumbled on an Indian blog that led me to discovering a very good band. They are called Avial and the first song I listened to was awesome. It is called nada nada.

I tried to get my Indian mates to translate but they could not because it is a different language from what they speak. One of them was however able to send me a link to the English translation and actual lyrics. I have also come across other foreign language bands but good music cuts down the language barrier. In my opinion, German is one of the most difficult languages to learn in the world but I like a lot of songs by the band Rammstein. When it comes to music, you don’t have to understand the language of the singer. Once you connect with the music then you are good to go. After all, music as I have heard is a universal language.

I normally try and resist social networking fads. I don’t use instant messaging, rarely, if ever, update my status on Twitter and only have the most basic of Facebook profiles that I’ve used to get in touch with old school friends. However, I got sent a link to one of the latest Facebook phenomenon and couldn’t resist getting involved!

It’s called the 30 Day Song Challenge and pretty much does exactly what it says on the tin. Each day, you have to post a link to an audio or video clip of a song, and the criteria is different for each of the 30 days. For example, day one is your favourite song while day 30 is your favourite song this time last year. Hmm, I could have problems with that one seeing as I probably can’t remember what my favourite song was this time last week!

Some of the others days are a bit more intriguing and I’ve already been putting my thinking cap on to come up with some cool and kooky song choices. For example, day 13 is your guilty pleasure song. I’m really spoiled for choice with this one. Do I pick Bad Romance by Lady Gaga, which I listened to pretty much non-stop when I was applying for locum GP jobs last year or do I pick anything by A-ha? Actually, I wouldn’t feel that guilty about liking A-ha or feel the need to keep it a secret! I’m having a lot of trouble narrowing down the choices for day 12 too – a song by a band you hate. First, I have to think of the band or artist I detest the most and then narrow down their revolting back catalogue to their most hateful song. All I have to do is listen to Radio One for an hour and I’ll have several options to choose from!
